ProteinsProteins are substances that build our body. They contain nitrogen. Without protein the body cannot produce the necessary enzymes and hormones for the exchange of energy. Proteins expedite the metabolism which in turn burns away tht food which is in excess of actual requirements. This dynamic action of protein controls the excess appetite and curbs the tendency to eat frequently. Protein also plays an important role in draining away the excess fluid from body. The protein is divided into two categories: vegetable protein and animal protein. Generally the animal protein is considered to be of superior quality. Vegetable protein can be made so by proper combination of some pulses. For example milk, buttermilk, curd, pulses, cereals etc. Diet should be planned so that the body gets about 50 to 60 grams of proteins every day. This much quantity of protein is necessary for maintaining the nitrogen balance in the body. Generally proteins and carbohydrates are available only in combined form and the effective S.D.A. of the food in which they are combined is far less. S.D.A. of protein is five times more than that of the carbohydrates. For fat person, if the carbohydrates are like poison, the proteins are like nector. |
